What is a soap nut?
Soap Nuts are the fruit of the Sapindus Mukarossi Tree. The nuts are harvested and then dried in the sun. No GMO's, parabens or chamicals are added to the nut so your current laundry detergent that contains chemicals is replaced with something completely organic - a natural soap called saponin.

How do I use them?
Just place 4 to 6 whole soap nuts in the drawstring wash bag (included with your purchase) and toss it into the washing machinewith your clothes. No additional fabric softener is needed. Soap nuts work equally well in top loaders or the newer HE front loaders. With a top loader expect about 6-8 wash loads using the same soap nuts. With a front loader HE machine you can expect about 8-10 wash loads. Extra bags are provided. The best way to tell if your soap nuts are used up is to put your used soap nuts in a jar with a lid with a few ounces of water and shake them up. If you get suds, you can get another load out of them. Pour the sudsy water in the washer and put the soap nuts back in the wash bag and toss them in for another load. Remember that the hardness of water has an effect on all cleaning products.

When adding your sop nuts to bags, please make sure the nuts are broken in half. We do not break them prior to shipping-we allow the natural bounciness of being trucked all over the place to break them up. If they are not all broken, break them in half prior to adding them to the wash bag so water can circulate more freely through the inside of the shell so they can release their saponin easier.

Warm or Hot Water Wash:
Put 6 whole soap nut shells or equivalent pieces, about a half-ounce, in muslin drawstring bag. Tie bag securely. Toss in washing machine before you add your clothes. Remove from washer at end of the wash to dry (leave soap nuts in bag). Re-use 5 to 7 times.

Cold Water Wash:
Simply make a cup of soap nut 'tea' by soaking 4 or 5 bagged soap nuts in a cup of very hot water for approximately 3 minutes. Pour both the soap nuts liquid and bag in wash.
Remove from washer at end of the wash to dry (leave soap nuts in bag).  Re-use 5 to 7 times.

The soap nuts will be mushy and gray when they are ready to be composted. To check to see if your soap nuts are ready to be composted, take a small jar and fill it with water. Add the soap nuts in question. Shake the jar hard. If you see soapy bubbles, the soap nuts are still working and you can use them again. If not, put them in the compost heap and use a new batch of soap nuts. Remember - Soap Nuts are natural therefore easily biodegradable.

What health hazards can I help avoid by using Soap Nut laundry soap?
Chemical laundry detergents, fabric softeners and dryer sheets should be avoided at all cost. These products contain chemicals classified under federal law as carcinogens, toxic and hazardous. Some are on the EPA hazardous waste list. The list of health hazards associated with the chemicals in laundry products is staggering and extremely serious. The list includes cancer, central nervous system depressant, kidney damage, headache, nausea, dizziness, confusion, twitching muscles, convulsions, fatigue, liver damage, birth defects, Alzheimer's disease, sudden infant death syndrome, reproductive problems and many more. For proof of this, just Google "laundry detergent health hazards". This is not a myth, it's a fact. There are known carcinogens in nationally advertised brands of laundry detergents, fabric softener and dryer sheets. Did you know that the European version of the EPA has banned about 1000 chemicals? The EPA in America has banned a total of 8 chemicals and has not banned a single chemical since 1976. It is illegal to sell American laundry detergents and fabric softeners in Europe, because they contain many banned chemicals. Yet Americans buy and use these toxic products every day. The big soap companies make billions of dollars a year while Americans are slowly being poisoned, along with our rivers, lakes and coastal waters. For a happy healthy family, buy NVO Soap Nuts and use our non toxic cleaning products.

Is water pollution really a problem?
Did you know that 40% of American rivers and 46% of America's lakes are too polluted for fishing, swimming, or aquatic life? In any given year, about 25% of the beaches in the USA are under advisories or are closed at least one time because of water pollution. There is a dead zone, where nothing is alive, in the Gulf of Mexico at the mouth of the Mississippi River the size of Massachusetts. We can help reverse this trend by using green products, including NVO Soap Nuts. Chemical laundry detergents such as Tide, Arm & Hammer Etc. contain chemicals that are classified by the US Government as Toxic, Hazardous and known Carcinogens. Amazingly, the big soap companies don't even have to list these extremely toxic, dangerous and even deadly chemicals on their packaging. The list of chemicals and their health hazards in scented laundry detergents, fabric softeners, and dryer sheets will certainly frighten you, and it should. Many articles can be found by Googling "laundry detergent health hazards".
